For almost a full century Hollywood has battled its love/hate relationship with queer communities and Hollywood’s double standard. On the one hand they’d be lost without us; after all, we gave them Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich and so many more.
Hollywood’s Double Standard
Yet, on the other hand, they’ve made quite a fortune on mocking queer communities, undermining decades of progress, and stripping gay and trans stars a chance at the silver screen so that cisgender heterosexuals can win yet another award for their “stunning” portrayal of one of our own. Isn’t it fascinating how they can just tap into all our frustrations and experiences from their little cis/het bubble? (We’re looking at you Scarlett Johansson). So grab some popcorn dripping with oil and join us as we talk about the many ways Hollywood has used our communities for their own advantage. If Hollywood had never blacklisted members of the LGBT community, would Marsha P. Johnson have needed to fight so hard for equality? “Queers” looking at you kid!!
