Joseph Lobdell dressed as a native americanThese were the words printed in a local Pennsylvania paper concerning a couple who didn’t quite fit the traditional molds, especially at the end of the 19th century. This episode focuses on a transgender man who was one of the most colorful characters of the 1800’s and whose story would affect medical research for half a century. From his time as “the female huntress of Delaware Country”, to his era as a traveling preacher, to his final decade in a mental institute for refusing to deny his identity, Joseph Lobdell lived a very full life.
